Sustainable development indicators

These sustainable development indicators (SDIs) provide information on Belgium’s progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These 17 goals, with 169 associated targets, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 (Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development).

To measure the progress of Belgium towards the SDGs, the Interfederal Statistical Institute has selected a set of 34 indicators (on this website tagged with VNR17).

In the 2017 Assessment, the Federal Planning Bureau assesses the trends of 34 SDIs towards goals from sustainable development strategies. This assessment is part of the 2017 Federal Report on Sustainable Development, an instrument of the Belgian federal sustainable development strategy (Act of 5 May 1997 on sustainable development, text in PDF available in French and Dutch).

The full report and previous assessment results are available on the website of the Federal Planning Bureau:

  • 2017 Report, available in French and Dutch (chapter 2 examines Belgium's progress towards the SDGs);
  • 2016 Assessment, available in French and Dutch;
  • 2015 Assessment, available in French and Dutch.

For each SDI, you will find on this website:

  • Data: figures in graphs and tables, from 1990 to 2016 if available, with a trend assessment, an international comparison and – if relevant and possible – breakdowns for different population groups; detailed source references;
  • Description: a definition of the indicator, the associated goal, the corresponding UN target and the closest related indicator from the UN Statistics Division list;
  • Download: all the above information in an XLSX file.
